ACID REFLUX (GERD)

Acid Reflux, also widely termed Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), is a chronic and often progressive digestive disorder where stomach acid persistently flows backward into the esophagus due to weakened lower esophageal sphincter functioning. This repeated acid exposure irritates the lining of the esophagus, producing sensations of burning discomfort, sour liquid regurgitation, chest tightness, chronic throat irritation, persistent cough, and difficulty in swallowing. Although many people consider occasional heartburn as a minor nuisance, unmanaged long-term reflux gradually leads to serious complications including esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus, precancerous transformations, ulceration, and chronic respiratory issues.
Acid Reflux is no longer limited to the elderly population. Modern stress-driven lifestyle, unhealthy eating patterns, erratic meal timings, processed food habits, excessive caffeine, alcohol, smoking, fast-paced life, poor sleep quality, obesity, and prolonged medication use have significantly increased the prevalence even among young adults. The digestive system suffers from overburdening, weakening the natural balance of gastric secretions and structural protective barriers, giving rise to severe irritation and reflux episodes.————————————————————————————————————————
CAUSES OF ACID REFLUX (GERD)

The underlying cause of Acid Reflux typically involves weakening or relaxation of the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES), the muscular valve between the stomach and esophagus responsible for preventing backward flow. When it becomes weak, improperly sealed, or excessively relaxed, acid escapes upward. However, numerous intrinsic and extrinsic factors contribute toward weakening of this protective mechanism.
Excessive stomach acid secretion due to stress, Pitta aggravation, spicy food intake, and prolonged hunger periods destabilize the digestive environment. Overeating creates abnormal pressure in the stomach causing reflux. Obesity increases abdominal pressure pushing stomach contents upward frequently. Chronic constipation, delayed gastric emptying, and bloating enhance internal pressure leading to acid backward movement.
Dietary triggers like fried food, sour food, carbonated drinks, alcohol, caffeine, mint, chocolate, tomato, onion, garlic, red meat, refined sugars, and packaged snacks play a major role. Irregular sleeping habits, lying down immediately after meals, heavy late-night dinners, and skipping breakfast disrupt digestive rhythm and acid regulation.
Medications such as painkillers, NSAIDs, steroids, antidepressants, blood pressure medicines, and birth control pills cause irritation and weaken LES stability. Smoking reduces saliva production necessary for acid neutralization and diminishes sphincter tone. Pregnancy and hiatal hernia further worsen structural strength causing chronic reflux patterns. Chronic stress alters hormonal responses reducing mucosal defense, digestive secretions, and motility capability.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF ACID REFLUX
Symptoms vary from mild intermittent burning sensations to severe persistent discomfort affecting daily well-being. Many individuals ignore early symptoms until complications intensify. Common symptoms include burning chest pain known as heartburn occurring after meals, regurgitation of sour liquid, bitter taste in mouth, bloating, excessive burping, pain radiating to back or throat, routine throat clearing, persistent dry cough, hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing, food getting stuck sensation, nausea, vomiting, metallic taste, bad breath, and hypersalivation.
Night-time reflux disturbs sleep, causing choking sensation, asthma-like breathlessness, restless nights, fatigue, and reduced concentration during daytime. In children, recurrent vomiting, irritability, feeding refusal, and failure to gain weight may signal reflux. Progressive cases lead to inflammation of the esophagus, painful ulcers, chronic throat inflammation, dental erosion due to acid exposure, and long-term risk of Barrett’s esophagus which predisposes to cancer.

DIAGNOSTIC METHODS FOR ACID REFLUX

Diagnosis requires clinical evaluation, symptom assessment, lifestyle analysis, medical history review, and supportive tests. Physicians examine severity, duration, frequency, and triggers. Endoscopy is commonly advised to visually inspect esophageal inflammation or ulceration. pH monitoring measures acid exposure duration. Esophageal motility testing evaluates sphincter strength and muscle contractions. Barium swallow X-ray studies structural issues such as hernia. In chronic cases, biopsy may be conducted to assess cellular changes.

ACID REFLUX – AYURVEDIC VIEW

In Ayurveda, Acid Reflux is identified as Amlapitta, originating from aggravated Pitta dosha and impaired Agni (digestive fire). When Pitta becomes excessively dominant due to hot, sour, spicy, salty foods, stress, suppressed hunger, late-night meals, and irregular sleep, stomach acids increase beyond natural limits. Weak digestion causes incomplete breakdown of food leading to fermentation and acidic sour fluid formation. This toxic acid rises upward towards the throat causing severe burning sensations.
Ayurveda describes that imbalance in Pachak Pitta disturbs Samana Vayu and Udana Vayu creating upward movement of acid. The esophageal mucosa loses lubrication (Kledak Kapha depletion) leading to inflammation and ulceration. Hence treatment focuses on balancing Pitta, restoring Agni, strengthening sphincter function, improving mucus protection, and pacifying Vata.

HERBAL REMEDIES FOR ACID REFLUX (AMLAPITTA)

Ayurveda emphasizes natural healing using herbs that soothe digestive tract lining, reduce acidity, balance Pitta, improve digestion, and strengthen motility. Herbs like Yashtimadhu (Licorice) coat and heal mucosal walls, Amalaki controls excessive acid and inflammation, Guduchi detoxifies and stabilizes immunity, Shatavari nourishes tissues, Bharangi relieves burning, Haritaki improves motility and relieves constipation, Mulethi reduces heartburn, Jeera and Dhaniya calm digestion, Fennel improves digestion and reduces gas pressure. Aloe vera gel cools internal inflammation. Coconut water restores electrolyte balance. Tulsi soothes nausea and cough caused by reflux. Pippali enhances absorption without irritation. Trikatu powder promotes healthy metabolism when taken carefully in small doses under guidance. Avipattikar churna is a classical Ayurvedic formulation providing quick relief by balancing Pitta and supporting smooth bowel movement.
Dietary and lifestyle recommendations include consuming smaller meals, avoiding late night eating, avoiding Pitta aggravating foods, including cooling foods such as ghee, buttermilk, banana, cucumber, coconut water, soaked almonds, and boiled vegetables. Sleep hygiene improvement, yoga practices like Vajrasana, deep breathing, meditation, and avoiding stress dramatically reduce episodes.
